With the right resources, you can save yourself a lot time, money, and headaches!
Containers are strong, flexible, and unique. Oftentimes, they can also be more sustainable and affordable than traditional homes. You’ve seen the incredible, inspiring projects that others have built and now it’s your turn. You just need to know where to begin.
You may have already searched for help online and found a mix of low-quality, confusing and contradictory information. Anyone can put up a website, and social media is full of well-meaning people with bad advice. Not to mention the staggering amount of time required to sort through it all and find what’s useful and accurate.
We’ve been in business since 2015 and in that time we’ve helped millions of website readers and sold our products to thousands of customers just like you from all over the world. Whether you want to do-it-yourself or hire a builder, you need a solid understanding of the container construction process. With the support of our products, you’ll have the confidence and know-how to build or buy your own shipping container building.
Making typical easy-to-avoid but expensive-to-fix design and construction mistakes
Choosing bad contractors and not knowing enough to hold them accountable until it's too late
Estimating poorly and managing ineffectively causing overshot timelines and blown budgets
Imagine you’re planning the vacation of a lifetime! You’re excited but nervous because there’s so much you don’t know, and you want to avoid overpaying or being taken advantage of.
A great travel guidebook helps maximize your vacation while minimizing your stress, wasted time, and money spent. And our Guide and Plans are your guidebooks for shipping container construction projects.
Think about it: the cost of our products are way less than 1% of your overall project. If we keep you from making a costly mistake, your return on investment would be huge! And if we inspire you with a design idea that improves your happiness and quality of life every day for years? Well, most people would say that’s worth it too.
If any of the following points apply to you, our Guide and Plans will be a worthwhile investment:
When the teams from authoritative resources like Vice, The Financial Times, and The Tim Ferris Show need high-quality information about container construction for their readers and listeners, they turn to us. They trust Discover Containers. And so can you.
And with a 4.7 out of 5 star average rating from actual buyers of our most popular product by far (The Combo Pack, ratings as of January 2023), it’s clear that our paying customers value our advice just as much as the professional publications.

What if I want paper copies? At this time, we do not offer hard copies of our Guide or Plans for sale. However, you’re more than welcome to print out paper versions for yourself if you prefer to read it in a physical format.
The Guide was originally created for 8.5″ x 11″ paper. The actual drawings sheets in the Plans are drawn and scaled for 11″ x 17″ paper.
What units do the Guide and Plans use for measurements? The vast majority of measurements are provided in feet-inches. Depending on subject matter, some measurements are given in metric units. Therefore, if you’re used to using metric units, you’ll need to convert most items.
Can’t I just find all the information I need on other websites, YouTube, and social media for free?Without a doubt, you can find everything for free online these days. And for a few people, that might be a good option. But for most, it’s easy to see how we’re providing value to you:
You don’t need to be an expert, but some DIY know-how will definitely help even though the guide is simple to understand and easy to use.
You may find it helpful to reference other books on topics like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical wiring if you aren’t familiar. You should be able to find examples at your local library or check our Resources page for suggestions.
Can I buy just a single design from the Plans? At this time, we only sell all 50 designs together as a package. Regardless of the size of your container home, there are ideas to glean from all the designs we offer.
Can’t I just design my own plans for free?Absolutely, assuming you have some experience with architectural drawing. However, you’ll probably need some ideas to get you started, and there is something unique about seeing actual floor plans.
In many ways, we see The Plans not as a substitute for custom designs, but an addition to them. Use The Plans to get inspiration for dozens of different ways of turning empty container boxes into liveable spaces.
Are the plans ready to build?Unless you’re a DIY expert or professional builder, probably not. Our Plans are ‘study plans’, meaning that they are intended to help you study the individual designs and better understand how to approach space usage and overall form. The plans lack the details typically needed for construction, such as structural, electrical, and plumbing drawings. We recommend these features be added later to suit the peculiarities of your location, regulations, and personal preferences.
Our plans sell for less than $1 per design. Plans with a bit more detail than ours typically sell for hundreds if not thousands of dollars each. Providing study plans allows us to showcase dozens of designs economically.
Given the wide variety of locations our plans are used, and the customizations owners will likely make, we’ve chosen not to develop and sell more complex, higher-priced plans at this time.
Are the plans approved for my [city/region/country]?As mentioned in the previous question, what we provide are study plans. The lack of plan detail gives you flexibility, but also some responsibility. You’ll likely need to get structural analysis, code compliance, etc. handled by a professional. This is even more important if your area has seismic activity, significant snow accumulation, high winds, unstable soils, etc.
With the variety of requirements that exist in different areas, it’s not practical for us to provide plans that are approved for everyone. We recommend that you work with a builder, engineer, or other professional to advise you on how to tailor the plans to meet the requirements in your area. And in many cases, this will be a requirement for you to legally build anyway.
